Welcome to the Kamikochi Nagano visitors guide. Practical tips to help you plan your visit to Kamikochi Japan.
Welcome to the Kamikochi Nagano visitors guide. Discover Nagano’s alpine valley in the Northern Japan Alps, with crystal-clear rivers, scenic walking trails and practical tips to help you plan your visit to Kamikochi Japan.
Kamikochi is a stunning alpine valley in Nagano Prefecture, set deep within the Northern Japan Alps. Firstly, its crystal-clear Azusa River, towering peaks and pristine forests make it one of Japan’s most beautiful natural destinations. Moreover, the car-free valley offers peaceful walking trails suitable for every fitness level, from gentle strolls past Kappa Bridge to challenging hikes toward Mount Yarigatake. Additionally, visitors can enjoy fresh mountain air, wildlife spotting and dramatic seasonal scenery, including spring greenery and vivid autumn colours.
However, Kamikochi is only open from mid-April to mid-November, so planning ahead is essential. Therefore, this guide covers access from Matsumoto and Takayama, accommodation, hiking routes and practical travel tips to help you make the most of your visit.
Private cars aren’t allowed into the valley, so you arrive by bus or taxi from one of two gateways: Matsumoto (Nagano side) or Hirayu Onsen (Gifu side).
If coming from Matsumoto (the most popular option), take the Matsumoto Electric Railway (Kamikochi Line) to Shin-Shimashima which takes about about 30 minutes. Then transfer to a bus to Kamikochi (about 1 hour). Some seasonal services run from Matsumoto Bus Terminal to Kamikochi in roughly 1.5 hours. From Takayama, take a bus to Hirayu Onsen, then change to a Kamikochi bus. Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours in total.
If you are coming direct from Tokyo, take the Limited Express Azusa from Shinjuku to Matsumoto (about 3 hours), then follow the Matsumoto route above. Travellers transiting from Kyoto, Nagoya or Osaka need to take the limited express to Matsumoto (Nagoya), or travel via Nagoya or Takayama (Osaka).
Kamikochi is open from mid-April to mid-November. Buses stop running outside this season. Services are less frequent early and late in the season, so check the current timetable and fares before you travel. Arrive early in autumn, as roads and buses get busy during peak colour weekends.
Staying overnight in Kamikochi Nagano lets you enjoy the valley at dawn and dusk, when the crowds thin and the mountain scenery is at its best. Options range from classic alpine hotels and traditional mountain lodges to simple huts and campgrounds, most clustered around Kappa Bridge and Taisho Pond.
Rooms are limited and the valley is only open from mid-April to mid-November, so book early, especially for autumn colour weekends. Many lodges include dinner and breakfast, and some offer hot spring baths.
If you prefer more choice and lower prices, Matsumoto, Hirayu Onsen and Takayama make convenient bases for day trips to Kamikochi Japan.
